”In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.“
John 1:4-5 ESV
The theme of light and darkness has been on my mind this Christmas season. As we come to the end of 2023, and reflecting on the year that has passed, there are many sources of darkness all around us. War, disease, death, depression, addiction, confusion, mental health crisis, poverty, political instability, extremism, crime, and an overarching lack of hope prevails.
Jesus is the light that extinguishes the darkness and yet more and more people don’t ‘see’ the light of life! Christ is reduced to a swear word, and those who believe in him as God’s son, are considered naive at best, barking mad at worst, but mostly fools.
What wisdom can human beings pitch against the almighty God who loves us with a love that shatters darkness, brings hope, and transforms lives by giving meaning and direction to those who see?
God’s love, unlike any human love, is unconditional and He is ‘the God who sees me’ in all my darkness and offers me his life-giving light.
This Christmas, acknowledge Jesus as the light of the world and invite him into your life. 🙏
